Frequently Asked Questions
What Types of Products Do You Bake?
At The Daily Knead, we specialize in naturally fermented sourdough breads, freshly milled sandwich breads, biscuits, pastries, cookies, banana bread, sourdough starter, and seasonal baked goods. Every product is handcrafted in small batches using the same commitment to quality ingredients, traditional methods, and homemade goodness.
Do You Use Preservatives?
No. We do not use artificial preservatives in our breads or baked goods. We believe food should be made with simple, recognizable ingredients and enjoyed fresh, just as it has been for generations.
What Is a Sourdough Starter?
A sourdough starter is a living culture made from flour and water that naturally cultivates wild yeast and beneficial bacteria. It's the heart of every sourdough loaf we bake and is what gives sourdough its distinctive flavor, texture, and character. With proper care, a sourdough starter can be maintained indefinitely and passed down for generations.
What Does "Freshly Milled" Mean?
Freshly milled flour is made by grinding whole wheat berries immediately before baking. Unlike commercial flour that is often milled months before reaching store shelves, freshly milled flour retains the grain's natural oils, nutrients, flavor, and aroma, resulting in bread that is both more flavorful and more wholesome.
Why Is Freshly Milled Flour Different?
When flour is milled fresh, all three parts of the grain—the bran, germ, and endosperm—remain intact. This preserves nutrients and natural oils that are often removed or diminished during commercial processing. The result is bread with a richer flavor, heartier texture, and the full character of the whole grain.
What Does "Naturally Fermented" Mean?
Natural fermentation is the traditional process of allowing dough to rise using wild yeast and beneficial bacteria from a sourdough starter instead of commercial yeast alone. This slower process develops deeper flavor, improved texture, and the distinctive qualities that make artisan sourdough so special.
Why Do You Focus on Real Ingredients?
As a homeschooling family, we believe that food plays an important role in health, nutrition, and bringing people together around the table. That's why we choose simple ingredients we feel good about serving our own family. Whether we're baking bread, muffins, cookies, or pastries, our goal is to create products made with ingredients you can recognize and trust.
Is Your Bread Made in Small Batches?
Yes. Every loaf, muffin, cookie, and baked good is handcrafted in small batches right here in Coral Springs, Florida. Small-batch baking allows us to focus on quality, consistency, and attention to detail rather than mass production.
Where Are Your Products Made?
All of our products are made in a Florida cottage food operation located in Coral Springs, Florida. Every item is handcrafted in our home kitchen and baked fresh for our local community.
Do You Offer Shipping?
At this time, all breads and baked goods are available for local pickup only in Coral Springs, Florida. Our sourdough starter is the only product currently available for shipping within the United States.
Why Is There a Boston Terrier in Your Logo?
Our logo features two Boston Terriers that represent the owner of The Daily Knead and his daughter, who share a love for baking and learning together. The inspiration comes from Ollie, our brown Boston Terrier, who is often nearby whenever baking is happening in the kitchen. The logo reflects what The Daily Knead is all about—family, tradition, and sharing good food with others.
